Supporting Immigrants and Refugee Families in LMSV Schools
We knew it was coming but last week, on his first day in office, President Trump signed executive orders that impact immigrants and refugees across the country. In already uncertain times, this has created more uncertainty and fear for many families in our community. As your school board trustee, I will continue the work of supporting each and every student, regardless of immigration status, as we continue to keep our schools safe, welcoming spaces for all.
San Diego County has a large percentage of refugee and immigrant families from diverse backgrounds and many of those families reside in communities our district serves. As we continue to monitor this situation for how it may affect our students, it’s important that every student and family knows their rights and how to access available resources in the region. Here’s how our district is responding:
Right to Free Public Education: The US Constitution still mandates all children have a right to equal access to free public education. La Mesa-Spring Valley will continue to provide high-quality education to all of our enrolled students, regardless of what their immigration status is.
School Enrollment: All schools must accept a variety of documents in order to demonstrate proof of a child’s age or residency. You are not required to prove citizenship or immigration status in order to enroll your child in school. La Mesa-Spring Valley will never specifically ask for or collect any information or documents regarding the citizenship or immigration status of students, potential students, or their families.
Safe and Supportive Campuses: Board Policy 5145.43 and Administrative Regulation 5145.43 mirror California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s guidance on how schools should proceed if immigration officials attempt to access a campus. Immigration officials are like any other visitor to the campus, and must check in at the front office and should not be allowed to enter without a valid court order signed by a judge.
Keep an eye out for Know Your Rights Workshops and additional information during these fluid times. AG Bonta will also be updating his office’s guidance as we learn more.
