Welcoming the New Year: Strength and Hope in Uncertain Times
As we enter this new year, I want to thank you for your steadfast support and dedication to our schools, our children, and our shared values. Together, we’ve built a foundation of progress, equity, and opportunity—one I am honored to defend as your school board trustee.
This year brings uncertainty. President-elect Trump and his Project 2025 agenda have threatened public education in ways that could undermine accessible, inclusive education and prioritize division over unity, fear over facts, and ideology over the needs of our children.
But we’ve proven time and again that progress is possible, even in challenging times. The rollout of community schools and their hubs will provide families with vital resources, from academic support to healthcare. By reaffirming state laws that protect LGBTQ+ students, we will continue to work to ensure that all children feel valued and safe in their classrooms.
These successes remind us of what we can achieve together, even as we face new threats. This year, we will continue to fight for schools where every child—regardless of race, gender identity, ability, or socioeconomic status—has the resources and support they need to thrive. We will resist efforts to roll back policies that promote equity and justice. And we will reaffirm our shared commitment to building schools that reflect the best of who we are.
Your engagement—whether through volunteering, attending meetings, or staying informed—will be crucial as we face these challenges together. Thank you for standing with me, with our schools, and with our students. Together, we can weather these challenges and continue championing equity and hope for all.
Wishing you and your loved ones a healthy and hopeful 2025.
With gratitude,
Brianna Coston
La Mesa-Spring Valley School Board Clerk
